Henan Asks Every Village to Send 2 People to Foxconn Apple Plant
Fleeing workers have crippled production in the capital of Zhengzhou
Foxconn’s covid lockdown is sending workers for the hills. As many outlets reported, workers have been leaving the facility because of covid lockdowns. Here’s CNBC from October 31: Fearing Covid, workers flee from Foxconn’s vast Chinese iPhone plant
After enduring days of lock-in at Foxconn’s vast facility in central China with 200,000 other workers, Yuan finally climbed the fences on Saturday night and escaped the complex, joining others fleeing what they feared was a widening Covid outbreak.
He walked through the night, keeping to a northerly route, towards his hometown of Hebi, every step taking him farther away from iPhone maker Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant, the Taiwan-based group’s largest in mainland China.
Apple admitted the situation is impacting its iPhone production on November 6. Now a government recruitment drive is hitting every village and town in the province.

On November 10, some media reported that some towns and towns in Henan Province had received the task of assisting Foxconn in Zhengzhou in recruiting workers, and assigned a number of quotas to the villages and towns under their jurisdiction.
"Two or three days ago, the town held a meeting to talk about this matter. All the villages went there. They said that each village worked hard to send to (Foxconn) for two people, and the Foxconn ones tried to persuade them to stay there." The counties under the jurisdiction of Xinxiang City, Henan Province In an interview with the "Daily Economic News" reporter, Yicun Party Secretary said, however, he said that the meeting was only a verbal notification, there was no official document, and there was no mandatory target.
This statement was also confirmed in the mouth of another village party secretary, "It has been almost two or three days, and someone from the village (government) told us that those who want to go to Foxconn can sign up for 30 yuan an hour." But he also Tell reporters that this is not compulsory, and you can go if you want.
On November 6, Apple's official website issued a statement saying that the epidemic restrictions temporarily affected the main assembly facilities of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in Zhengzhou. The current capacity of the Zhengzhou plant has been significantly reduced.
They’re also offering 500 yuan (about $70) to workers who return. The company says it is getting back to its production schedule quickly.
That sounds nuts.
Can the workers leave if they want to? Are they required to work 70hrs/week? Seems like something is really off there if that's a high wage and they can't fill positions.
